Bhojpur is situated 28 kms away from Bhopal on the banks of the river Betwa. The town was built by Raja Bhoj who was the founder of Bhopal. He constructed a 400 sq km lake in Bhojpur which was destroyed by the ruler of Mandu but one can still see remains of the magnificent Bhojeshwar temple (dedicated to Shiva) on the hill and the cyclopean dam. The Bhojeshwar temple, which is dedicated to Shiva houses the largest Shiva lingam in India, which is 7.5 ft tall and 18 ft in circumference and is crafted out a single rock. There is an incomplete Jain temple also close to the Bhojeshwar temple which houses a 6 meter-tall statue of Mahavir and two statues of Parshvanath. Every year, on the occasion of Maha Shivaratri, an extravagant fair is organized in Bhojpur Bhojpur can be covered as a full day excursion along with Rock Shelters of Bhimbetka, a world heritage site. The best option would be to hire a return taxi from Bhopal.
